On-Chain Asset Verification
On-chain Asset Verification is the process of cryptographically proving that a specific set of blockchain addresses is controlled by a particular custodian. This is usually achieved by requiring the custodian to sign a message with the private keys associated with those addresses, or by performing a specific transaction that proves control.
This verification is a necessary counterpart to liability proofs, as it confirms that the assets exist on the blockchain and are under the custodian's control. Without this step, an exchange could claim to have assets that it does not actually possess.
By linking the public keys to the custodial entity, the industry can create a transparent view of the firm's true financial standing. This process is increasingly automated, allowing for near-real-time monitoring of asset levels.
It is a critical component of building trust in any centralized digital asset management service.
