## Notional Amount

The Notional Amount is the face value or the total size of the underlying asset upon which interest payments for a derivative contract are calculated. In an interest rate swap or similar derivative, the notional amount does not actually change hands; it serves only as a reference point for determining the cash flows between the two parties.

For example, if two parties swap interest rates on a notional amount of ten thousand units, the interest is calculated based on that figure, even though the ten thousand units themselves are not exchanged. Understanding the notional amount is critical for assessing the leverage and the total exposure of a derivative position.

It defines the scale of the financial impact that interest rate changes will have on the contract participants.
