Multi-Sig
Multi-sig, or multi-signature, refers to a digital signature scheme that requires multiple private keys to authorize a single transaction on a blockchain. Unlike a standard wallet that uses a single private key, a multi-sig wallet typically employs an M-of-N setup, where M is the number of required signatures and N is the total number of keys assigned to the wallet.
This mechanism significantly enhances security by eliminating single points of failure, as an attacker would need to compromise multiple independent keys to steal funds. It is a foundational component in institutional cryptocurrency custody, decentralized autonomous organizations, and shared escrow services.
By distributing authority, multi-sig setups mitigate the risk of lost keys and insider threats. This structure is essential for managing treasury funds or securing large amounts of assets where trust must be distributed among several parties or hardware devices.
It effectively turns a single transaction into a collaborative approval process.
