Metcalfe Law posits that the value of a network is proportional to the square of the number of its connected users. In the context of cryptocurrency, this framework often fails because it assumes every user connection adds equal value.

It ignores the reality that network activity is highly heterogeneous, with many wallets holding negligible amounts or remaining inactive. Furthermore, it does not account for the diminishing returns of adding low-value nodes to a network.

The law also overlooks the impact of protocol congestion, where increased user count can actually degrade performance and raise transaction costs. It fails to integrate the complexity of Layer 2 scaling solutions or the influence of whales who disproportionately drive network utility.

Finally, it neglects the security risks and regulatory hurdles that can stifle growth regardless of user count.
