Material Non-Public Information
Material non-public information refers to any data that is not yet available to the general public and has the potential to significantly impact the price of an asset. In the crypto domain, this includes details about unannounced smart contract upgrades, major exchange listings, or private funding rounds.
Possessing this information creates an informational asymmetry that, if used for trading, constitutes a serious legal violation. The challenge in decentralized markets is defining what constitutes public information, given the transparency of the blockchain.
However, information that is not easily accessible or understandable by the average participant is generally treated as non-public. Firms must implement strict data handling policies to ensure such information does not leak to unauthorized personnel.
