Liability Snapshotting
Liability Snapshotting is the process of capturing the state of all user account balances across an entire platform at a precise moment in time. This snapshot serves as the basis for the Merkle Tree construction and the subsequent proof of reserves audit.
Because crypto markets operate 24/7, the timing of the snapshot is critical to ensure that assets and liabilities are matched correctly. If assets move during the snapshot process, the proof could become inaccurate or misleading.
Therefore, institutions must implement rigorous synchronization to ensure that the total liability figure is accurate. This snapshot acts as a frozen record that is then verified against the total assets held.
It is the foundation for all subsequent cryptographic audit procedures. Without an accurate snapshot, the entire audit is compromised.
