Incentive Engineering
Incentive Engineering is the discipline of designing reward structures to guide participant behavior toward the desired outcomes for a protocol. In DeFi, this involves creating mechanisms like liquidity mining, staking rewards, and referral programs to bootstrap network effects.
The challenge lies in creating incentives that are attractive enough to gain traction but sustainable enough to survive long-term market cycles. Poorly engineered incentives often result in inflationary pressure or transient liquidity that vanishes once rewards are reduced.
Effective engineering requires a balance between attracting new users and retaining existing ones. It is a fundamental component of the economic architecture of any successful decentralized derivative platform.
