Idle Capital
Idle capital refers to assets deposited into a lending protocol that are not currently being borrowed or utilized for yield-generating activities. From the perspective of a liquidity provider, idle capital represents a lost opportunity cost, as it is not earning the maximum possible return.
For the protocol, however, a certain amount of idle capital is necessary to provide a buffer for immediate withdrawals and to ensure the system can handle unexpected demand. The goal of any efficient lending protocol is to minimize idle capital without compromising the liquidity buffer.
Protocols that consistently have large amounts of idle capital may need to re-evaluate their interest rate models or incentive structures to attract more borrowers and improve capital efficiency.
