Hashrate Centralization

Hashrate centralization refers to the concentration of mining power within a small number of entities, mining pools, or geographic regions. When a large percentage of the total network computational power is controlled by a few actors, the risk of a 51 percent attack increases significantly.

This phenomenon often occurs due to economies of scale, where larger operations benefit from cheaper electricity and optimized ASIC hardware. Mining pools exacerbate this by aggregating the hashrate of many individual miners to smooth out revenue volatility.

While pooling is essential for individual participation, it centralizes the decision-making power regarding which blocks to validate. If too much power rests with a single entity, the censorship resistance of the network could be compromised.

This issue is a central concern for the long-term decentralization and security of Proof of Work blockchains. Monitoring the distribution of hashrate is a vital component of assessing the health of a digital asset ecosystem.
