Hash Commitments

Hash commitments are a fundamental cryptographic tool used to verify that a piece of information was known at a certain point in time without revealing the information itself. In financial protocols, a user computes the hash of their trade details and submits this hash to the blockchain.

Because the hash is one-way, no one can determine the original trade details from it. Later, when the user reveals the original trade data, the protocol can verify that it matches the initial hash, proving that the user did not change their trade after seeing other market activity.

This is the bedrock of commit-reveal schemes, ensuring that users are committed to their actions before they can be influenced by others. Hash commitments provide a secure way to manage state transitions in decentralized environments.

They are simple yet powerful tools for preventing cheating and ensuring fairness in competitive scenarios. By anchoring intent on the blockchain, they create a clear and immutable audit trail.
