Governance Weight

Governance weight is the influence a participant has in the decision-making process of a decentralized protocol, usually determined by the number of tokens they hold or stake. This system ensures that those with the most "skin in the game" have the greatest say in the future direction of the network.

It is a common model in decentralized autonomous organizations. However, it can lead to plutocracy where the wealthy have disproportionate control.

To mitigate this, many protocols are exploring alternative voting mechanisms like quadratic voting or reputation-based weighting. Governance weight is a central pillar of protocol evolution and value accrual.

It defines how changes to the system are implemented and how treasury funds are managed. It is a critical aspect of tokenomics.
