## Gamma

Gamma measures the rate of change of an options Delta relative to changes in the underlying assets price. It represents the second-order sensitivity of the option price, essentially describing the convexity of the price curve.

High Gamma values indicate that the Delta of the position will change rapidly as the underlying price moves, which is particularly common for at-the-money options near expiration. In cryptocurrency markets, where price gaps and flash crashes are frequent, Gamma risk is significant because it can lead to explosive losses or gains.

Market makers who are short Gamma are particularly vulnerable, as they must buy high and sell low to maintain a neutral position as the underlying price fluctuates. This phenomenon is known as Gamma hedging, which can exacerbate volatility in the underlying spot market.

Conversely, long Gamma positions benefit from increased volatility, as the delta adjusts in a favorable direction. Understanding Gamma is crucial for anticipating how a portfolio will behave under extreme market stress.

It is a key factor in managing the stability of automated market-making protocols.

## Glossary

### [Vega and Gamma Exposure](https://term.greeks.live/area/vega-and-gamma-exposure/)

Exposure ⎊ Cryptocurrency options trading necessitates a precise understanding of exposure to various risk factors, with Vega and Gamma representing critical sensitivities within a derivative’s price profile.

### [Delta-Gamma Trade-off](https://term.greeks.live/area/delta-gamma-trade-off/)

Action ⎊ The Delta-Gamma trade-off, within cryptocurrency derivatives, fundamentally involves balancing changes in an option's delta (sensitivity to price movements) against changes in its gamma (rate of change of delta).

### [Negative Gamma Regimes](https://term.greeks.live/area/negative-gamma-regimes/)

Analysis ⎊ Negative Gamma Regimes represent periods of heightened sensitivity to market movements stemming from options positioning, particularly concerning dealers hedging their exposure.

### [Gamma Flip Level](https://term.greeks.live/area/gamma-flip-level/)

Analysis ⎊ Gamma Flip Level denotes a critical price point in options chains where the aggregate gamma—a measure of an option’s sensitivity to underlying asset price changes—transitions from positive to negative for market makers.

### [Gamma Exposure Flow](https://term.greeks.live/area/gamma-exposure-flow/)

Exposure ⎊ Gamma Exposure Flow, within cryptocurrency derivatives, represents the dynamic interplay between an option's delta and the underlying asset's volatility, particularly concerning changes in gamma.

### [Gamma Cliff Phenomenon](https://term.greeks.live/area/gamma-cliff-phenomenon/)

### [Negative Gamma](https://term.greeks.live/area/negative-gamma/)

Analysis ⎊ Negative Gamma represents a portfolio’s sensitivity to changes in the underlying asset’s price, specifically indicating an inverse relationship where increasing price leads to increased selling pressure from option market makers.

### [Synthetic Gamma](https://term.greeks.live/area/synthetic-gamma/)

Application ⎊ Synthetic Gamma, within cryptocurrency derivatives, represents a strategy to replicate the payoff profile of an option using a dynamic hedge comprised of the underlying asset and another option, often achieving a cost advantage or enhanced flexibility.

### [Protocol Governance](https://term.greeks.live/area/protocol-governance/)

Action ⎊ Protocol governance, within decentralized systems, represents the codified mechanisms by which network participants enact changes to the underlying protocol rules.

### [DeFi Options Protocols](https://term.greeks.live/area/defi-options-protocols/)

Asset ⎊ DeFi options protocols represent a novel application of financial derivatives within decentralized finance, enabling users to gain exposure to, or hedge against, the price fluctuations of underlying crypto assets.
