## Funding Rates

Funding rates are periodic payments made between long and short traders in perpetual futures contracts to ensure the contract price stays anchored to the spot price of the underlying asset. When the perpetual price is higher than the spot price, longs pay shorts, incentivizing longs to close and shorts to open, which pulls the price down.

When the perpetual price is lower, shorts pay longs. This mechanism is unique to crypto perpetual swaps and acts as a self-regulating interest rate.

Traders monitor funding rates to gauge market sentiment and the cost of maintaining a leveraged position. High funding rates can indicate an over-leveraged long or short side, which may precede a market reversal.
