Fractionalization Mechanisms
Fractionalization mechanisms are the technical processes that allow a single high-value asset to be divided into smaller, tradeable units on a blockchain. This is achieved by minting a large supply of tokens that each represent a small percentage of ownership in the underlying asset.
These mechanisms handle the distribution of dividends, voting rights, or other benefits proportionately among all token holders. By lowering the barrier to entry, fractionalization allows retail investors to gain exposure to assets that were previously accessible only to institutional investors.
The mechanism must ensure that the fractional ownership is legally recognized and that the total supply of tokens accurately reflects the asset value. This process significantly enhances liquidity, as it is easier to trade small fractions of an asset than the entire asset itself.
It is a key driver for the democratization of investment opportunities within the digital asset space.
