## Exercise Date

The exercise date, also known as the expiration date, is the final day on which an option contract is valid. After this date, the contract ceases to exist, and any rights associated with it are forfeited.

For American-style options, the holder can exercise their right at any time up to and including the expiration date. For European-style options, which are more common in many crypto derivatives protocols, the option can only be exercised on the expiration date itself.

The choice of expiration date is a key decision for traders, as it determines the time horizon of their strategy and the rate of premium decay. Shorter-term options have higher theta decay, while longer-term options are more sensitive to changes in implied volatility.

Understanding the exercise date is essential for managing the lifecycle of an options trade and for planning for settlement. It is the definitive endpoint for the contract's existence.

Traders must be aware of these dates to avoid unintended expiration or to ensure they can exercise their rights when desired.
