## European Option

A European option is a type of financial derivative contract that can only be exercised at the specific expiration date, rather than at any time before that date. This limitation simplifies the pricing model compared to American options, which can be exercised early.

Because they cannot be exercised early, European options are easier to value using models like Black-Scholes, as the time value component is more predictable. In the digital asset space, most cryptocurrency options traded on major platforms are European-style, which aids in standardized clearing and settlement processes.

This structure provides certainty for market makers and liquidity providers, as they do not face the risk of early exercise. The lack of early exercise capability means that the value of the option is purely a function of the underlying asset price, volatility, time to expiration, and interest rates.

Traders must hold the position until maturity or sell the option contract in the secondary market to exit their position. This standardization is a key factor in the growth and maturation of crypto derivative markets.
