## Epoch Duration

Epoch duration refers to the fixed time interval used by a proof of stake protocol to manage validator sets, reward distribution, and checkpointing. At the end of each epoch, the protocol typically updates the validator list based on new stakes and processes pending unstaking requests.

Shorter epochs allow for faster updates and more frequent reward payouts but increase the computational overhead on the network. Longer epochs provide more stability and reduce the frequency of state transitions.

The design of epoch duration is a trade off between responsiveness and the operational burden on the nodes participating in the consensus.
