Economic Circuit Breakers
Economic circuit breakers are automated mechanisms designed to halt or limit trading and protocol activity during periods of extreme volatility or suspected attack. By temporarily suspending operations or imposing caps on withdrawals and trades, these breakers prevent the propagation of systemic failure and give developers time to address vulnerabilities.
In DeFi, they may involve pausing a lending pool if a collateral asset drops below a certain price or limiting the amount of assets that can be bridged in a single transaction. While they introduce a degree of centralization or trust, they are often necessary to protect user funds in high-risk environments.
Implementing effective circuit breakers requires a balance between safety and maintaining the permissionless nature of the system. They are a critical tool for managing tail risk and systemic contagion.
