Dust Attack
A dust attack is a technique where malicious actors send tiny, almost negligible amounts of cryptocurrency to a large number of public wallet addresses. The objective is to track these small amounts, known as dust, as they move through the blockchain to identify the owner of the wallet.
By analyzing the transaction history and the consolidation of these small amounts with other assets, attackers can deanonymize the user behind the wallet. This information can then be used for targeted phishing campaigns or extortion attempts.
Because blockchain ledgers are transparent, every transaction is traceable, making this a potent tool for privacy erosion. Users should be aware that their transaction patterns can reveal their identity if they are not using privacy-enhancing technologies.
