Depth Charts
A depth chart is a visual representation of the order book for a specific financial instrument, showing the aggregate quantity of buy and sell orders at various price levels. It displays the market depth by plotting the cumulative volume of bids on one side and asks on the other, creating a mountain-like silhouette.
The intersection of these two curves represents the current market price, while the slope of the curves indicates the liquidity available at different price points. A steep slope suggests high liquidity, meaning large orders can be executed with minimal price impact, whereas a shallow slope indicates thin liquidity and higher potential for slippage.
Traders use depth charts to gauge market sentiment, identify potential support and resistance levels, and detect large buy or sell walls that might influence price action. In cryptocurrency exchanges, depth charts are critical tools for assessing the ease of entering or exiting positions without significantly moving the market price.
