Decentralized Autonomous Organization Capture
Decentralized Autonomous Organization capture occurs when an external entity or a small group of insiders gains effective control over a DAO's decision-making process, subverting its original purpose. This can happen through the systematic acquisition of a majority of voting tokens, the exploitation of governance bugs, or the manipulation of the voting process itself.
Once captured, the entity can redirect treasury funds, alter protocol rules, or extract value from the network, often leaving the broader community with little recourse. Capture represents a significant existential threat to the decentralized ethos of DeFi, as it centralizes power under the guise of autonomy.
Detecting and preventing capture involves rigorous monitoring of voting patterns, governance participation, and token distribution concentration. Successful defense often requires community mobilization and the implementation of anti-capture mechanisms like veto powers or multisig oversight.
