## Data Snooping

Data snooping is the practice of repeatedly testing different hypotheses or parameters on the same dataset until a statistically significant result is found by pure chance. In financial engineering, researchers may adjust various indicators or entry rules until they find a combination that would have been profitable in the past.

Because the data has been probed so many times, the final result is likely a statistical artifact rather than a genuine market edge. This is a major issue in quantitative research where researchers fall victim to finding patterns that do not actually exist.

It leads to the development of strategies that have no predictive power in live markets. Proper methodology requires testing strategies on out-of-sample data that was never used during the research phase.
