## Data Latency Risks

Data latency risks arise when there is a delay between the occurrence of an event off-chain and its reflection on the blockchain via an oracle. In fast-moving financial markets, even a delay of a few seconds can be significant.

If a protocol uses stale data for margin calls or price calculations, it may fail to execute critical functions at the right time. This can lead to under-collateralized positions that the protocol cannot liquidate in time, causing systemic risk.

Protocols mitigate this by using high-frequency updates or setting wider safety margins. However, there is always a trade-off between the cost of frequent updates and the risk of latency.

It is a technical challenge that directly impacts the reliability of derivative protocols.
