Consensus Mechanisms
Consensus mechanisms are the protocols that allow a distributed network of computers to agree on the state of a blockchain without the need for a central authority. These mechanisms are vital for financial settlement as they determine the validity of transactions and the order in which they are processed.
Common types include Proof of Work and Proof of Stake, each offering different trade-offs regarding security, speed, and energy consumption. In derivatives, the consensus mechanism ensures that margin calls and liquidations are processed reliably and transparently.
By providing a single source of truth, these mechanisms facilitate trust in environments where participants do not inherently know or trust one another. They are the technical foundation upon which decentralized financial systems are built.
