Confirmation Threshold
A confirmation threshold is the number of blocks a user or exchange requires to be built on top of a transaction before it is accepted as final. This parameter is a risk management tool used to balance the trade-off between speed and security.
A low threshold allows for faster trading but exposes the participant to potential reorganization risks. A high threshold provides greater security but increases settlement latency and capital lock-up.
The appropriate threshold depends on the value of the transaction and the current hashrate or security of the underlying blockchain. For large derivatives trades, platforms often mandate a high number of confirmations to prevent malicious actors from exploiting reorganization vulnerabilities.
It is a dynamic variable that can be adjusted based on network health.
