Colocation
Colocation is the practice of placing trading servers in the same physical data center as an exchange matching engine to minimize network latency. By reducing the physical distance that data packets must travel, traders can achieve the fastest possible execution times.
While common in traditional finance, colocation presents significant challenges in decentralized finance, where nodes are distributed globally to ensure censorship resistance. Some protocols attempt to replicate the benefits of colocation through specialized hardware or decentralized validator clusters that provide low-latency access to the network.
This remains a point of contention as it creates barriers to entry for participants who lack the resources to optimize their infrastructure to such an extreme degree.
