Channel Settlement Latency

Channel Settlement Latency refers to the time delay between the request to close a payment channel and the final settlement of assets on the main blockchain. During this period, the network typically enforces a challenge window to allow the other party to dispute the closing state if it is fraudulent.

This delay is a necessary trade-off for the security of off-chain transactions. While the transactions within the channel are instantaneous, the exit process is limited by the block time and consensus rules of the base layer.

High latency can be a disadvantage for traders who need to move their capital quickly to other venues. Minimizing this latency while maintaining safety is a primary focus of research in channel architecture.

It is the duration during which funds remain locked before they become fully liquid again.
