Chain hopping is a technique used to obfuscate the origin and destination of funds by rapidly moving cryptocurrency assets across multiple different blockchains. An actor transfers digital assets from one network to another using decentralized exchanges, cross-chain bridges, or centralized services to break the trail of transaction history.

This process is frequently employed to evade regulatory oversight, anti-money laundering controls, and forensic analysis conducted by law enforcement. By jumping between chains with varying levels of privacy and anonymity, the user creates a fragmented audit trail that is difficult to trace.

It complicates the work of blockchain analytics firms that rely on persistent transaction patterns to identify illicit activity. While it can be used for legitimate privacy, it is a primary method for laundering proceeds from hacks or scams.

The complexity of tracking assets across disparate ledger architectures makes this a significant challenge for modern financial surveillance.
