Canonical Chain
The canonical chain is the primary, valid version of a blockchain that is accepted by the majority of the network. It represents the longest or most-work-proven sequence of blocks that all participants agree upon.
When forks occur, the consensus mechanism determines which chain is the canonical one based on the protocol rules. Transactions included in the canonical chain are considered settled and permanent.
It is the single source of truth for all users and applications built on top of the network. Ensuring the security and integrity of the canonical chain is the primary goal of consensus protocols.
