Attestation Vs Audit
Attestation and audit represent two different levels of assurance regarding the financial state of a stablecoin issuer. An attestation is a limited engagement where an accounting firm verifies a specific aspect of the reserves at a single point in time, often based on assertions provided by management.
It is less comprehensive than a full audit, which involves a deep, systematic examination of the issuer's internal controls, accounting practices, and overall financial health over a period of time. While attestations are common in the cryptocurrency industry due to their speed and lower cost, they provide less certainty than a full audit.
Market participants must understand this distinction when evaluating the risk of an asset. An audit offers a higher degree of confidence because it requires the firm to independently verify the existence and control of the underlying assets.
Relying solely on attestations can leave significant gaps in transparency and risk assessment.
