Asynchronous networking in blockchain refers to systems where messages can be delayed, lost, or arrive out of order, yet the network must still reach a correct consensus. Designing protocols that remain secure in such environments is the most difficult challenge in distributed systems.

Unlike synchronous systems, which rely on fixed timing, asynchronous protocols are more robust against network attacks or partitions. For global financial systems, this is critical because internet connectivity is never perfectly reliable.
