American Style Options

American-style options are contracts that allow the holder to exercise their rights at any time before the expiration date. This flexibility distinguishes them from European-style options, which can only be exercised at the end of the term.

Because of this feature, American options are generally more complex to price, as the timing of the exercise must be factored into the valuation. They are common in equity markets and some cryptocurrency derivative protocols.

The possibility of early exercise creates additional risks for the option writer, such as the potential for unexpected assignment. Traders must consider the impact of dividends or, in the case of crypto, potential staking rewards or hard forks when deciding whether to exercise early.

This style of option requires more active monitoring of the position and the underlying market conditions. The added flexibility provides more utility for the holder but introduces higher complexity for the seller.
