UST Depeg 2022

Depeg

The algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST), initially pegged to the US dollar, experienced a significant depegging event in May 2022, triggering a cascading collapse of its associated cryptocurrency, LUNA. This event exposed vulnerabilities inherent in algorithmic stablecoin designs, particularly those reliant on arbitrage mechanisms and incentivized minting/burning dynamics. The rapid loss of UST’s peg highlighted the risks associated with over-reliance on market incentives and the potential for destabilizing feedback loops within decentralized financial (DeFi) ecosystems. Subsequent analysis revealed a confluence of factors, including large-scale withdrawals, coordinated attacks, and a lack of sufficient collateralization, contributed to the dramatic devaluation.
