Theta Decay Harvesting

Definition

Theta decay harvesting, or theta positive trading, refers to the systematic extraction of value from an options position as the time to expiration approaches. This strategy relies on the mathematical reality that the extrinsic value of an option contract diminishes at an accelerating rate as the final settlement date draws closer. Traders execute this by assuming the role of the option seller or writer to collect premium while minimizing exposure to adverse underlying asset price movements.
