Terra Collapse

Mechanism

The Terra collapse refers to the systemic failure of the algorithmic stablecoin UST and its companion asset LUNA, which relied on a circular mint-and-burn incentive structure to maintain a price parity with the United States dollar. When the exchange rate deviated below its intended target, the protocol forced an uncontrolled issuance of LUNA to absorb selling pressure, creating a hyperinflationary death spiral. This feedback loop destroyed the market capitalization of both tokens as liquidity evaporated under extreme sell-side momentum.
