Taproot Upgrade

Architecture

The Taproot Upgrade, activated on Bitcoin’s mainnet in November 2021, fundamentally alters the scripting capabilities of the Bitcoin blockchain. It introduces Schnorr signatures and MAST (Merkle Abstracted Script Tree) to enhance privacy and efficiency. This architectural shift allows for more complex smart contracts to be executed without revealing the full details of the script on the blockchain, improving transaction confidentiality. Consequently, it reduces transaction sizes and lowers on-chain fees, particularly for complex multi-signature transactions and other advanced applications.
