Synthetic Bonds

Definition

Synthetic bonds are financial derivatives designed to replicate the economic characteristics of traditional fixed-income instruments without holding the underlying debt security directly. In the context of crypto, these are often implemented as smart contracts that simulate bond-like cash flows, such as regular interest payments and a principal repayment at maturity. They derive their value from an underlying asset or a basket of assets, often stablecoins or other cryptocurrencies. This creates a tokenized representation of debt. They offer exposure to fixed income.
