Slashing Events

Definition

Slashing events refer to the punitive mechanism in Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain networks where a validator’s staked cryptocurrency is partially or entirely confiscated as a penalty for malicious or negligent behavior. Such behaviors include double-signing transactions, being offline for extended periods, or violating network consensus rules. This mechanism is designed to incentivize honest participation and secure the network. For staked assets used as collateral in cryptocurrency options and derivatives, slashing events introduce a direct loss of underlying value. It is a critical risk factor for stakers and DeFi protocols.
