Relayer Centralization

Architecture

Relayer centralization describes a structural tendency within blockchain networks, particularly those employing optimistic rollups or similar layer-2 scaling solutions, where a limited number of relayers control the submission and verification of transaction data. This concentration of power can arise from economic incentives, technical barriers to entry, or strategic decisions by network participants. Consequently, a small group of entities effectively gatekeeps the interaction between the layer-2 and layer-1 chains, potentially introducing single points of failure or censorship vulnerabilities. Mitigating this requires incentivizing a more decentralized relay network through mechanisms like reputation systems, economic penalties for malicious behavior, and improved tooling to lower operational costs.
