Order Book Trilemma

Concept

The Order Book Trilemma posits that a decentralized exchange (DEX) cannot simultaneously achieve decentralization, scalability, and capital efficiency in its order book design. Achieving two of these properties often comes at the expense of the third. For instance, a fully on-chain order book is decentralized but lacks scalability and capital efficiency due to blockchain constraints. This concept highlights fundamental design challenges in building robust decentralized derivatives markets. It frames the trade-offs inherent in DEX architecture.
