Layer 2 Fee Abstraction

Architecture

Layer 2 fee abstraction represents a fundamental shift in transaction cost management within cryptocurrency networks, particularly impacting decentralized finance (DeafFi) and derivatives trading. It decouples gas costs associated with Layer 1 base layers from user interactions on Layer 2 scaling solutions, effectively concealing the underlying complexity of network fees. This abstraction is achieved through mechanisms like meta-transactions or account abstraction, where a third party, such as a relayer, sponsors the gas costs, allowing users to transact without directly paying them. Consequently, this facilitates broader accessibility and improved user experience, lowering the barrier to entry for participation in complex financial instruments.
