Ghost Liquidity

Liquidity

Ghost liquidity, within cryptocurrency markets and derivatives, describes apparent liquidity that vanishes under stress or during periods of heightened volatility. Order books may display substantial depth, suggesting ease of execution, yet attempts to execute sizable orders result in rapid price slippage and order rejection. This phenomenon arises from a combination of factors, including high-frequency trading algorithms, market maker withdrawal, and a general lack of genuine interest at prevailing prices, particularly when directional conviction intensifies.
