Commitment Risk

Risk

Commitment risk, within cryptocurrency, options trading, and financial derivatives, represents the potential for losses arising from an unwillingness or inability to fulfill contractual obligations related to derivative positions. This stems from a divergence between a trader’s stated intentions—for example, entering into an options contract—and their subsequent actions, or lack thereof. Such inaction can manifest as failing to exercise an option, settle a futures contract, or deliver an underlying asset, thereby exposing the counterparty to unexpected risk and potentially destabilizing market equilibrium. Effective risk management necessitates a thorough assessment of commitment risk, particularly in nascent and volatile crypto markets where counterparty creditworthiness and regulatory frameworks may be less established.
