Collateral De-Pegging

Risk

Collateral de-pegging represents a significant risk event where a stablecoin or other pegged asset loses its intended value parity with its underlying collateral. This phenomenon typically occurs during periods of extreme market volatility or due to flaws in the stablecoin’s algorithmic design. The risk of de-pegging is particularly acute for overcollateralized stablecoins where the value of the collateral asset drops sharply, triggering mass liquidations and potentially causing a death spiral.
