Central Clearing Party

Clearing

A Central Clearing Party (CCP) acts as an intermediary in financial transactions, primarily within options trading, derivatives markets, and increasingly, cryptocurrency derivatives. It interposes itself between counterparties, guaranteeing the completion of trades even if one party defaults, thereby mitigating systemic risk. This function involves novating trades, assuming the role of buyer to every seller and seller to every buyer, and managing collateral requirements to ensure solvency. The CCP’s operational model significantly enhances market stability and reduces counterparty credit risk, a critical element in fostering confidence and liquidity.
