Bank Runs

Asset

A bank run, within cryptocurrency, manifests as a rapid, large-scale withdrawal of funds from a centralized exchange or DeFi protocol, often triggered by concerns regarding solvency or security. This dynamic differs from traditional banking due to the increased velocity of digital asset transfers and the transparency, or lack thereof, inherent in smart contract systems. Consequently, assessing counterparty risk becomes paramount, as the underlying assets may not be fully collateralized or subject to the same regulatory oversight as fiat currency deposits.
