51% Attack

Consensus

A 51% attack exploits the fundamental consensus mechanism of a Proof-of-Work blockchain. By controlling the majority of the network’s computational power, an attacker can dictate which blocks are added to the chain. This capability allows the malicious actor to create a longer, alternative chain in secret, effectively overriding the legitimate transaction history. The integrity of the ledger is compromised when the attacker’s version of events is accepted by the network as the canonical truth.
